The Repentant Life

Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

James 2:17

If you have turned away from your sins and turned toward God’s way of righteousness, you will live a changed life. The theme of 1 John is that the truly redeemed person will demonstrate a truly transformed life. “Whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked” (1 John 2:5-6).

Those who teach that repentance and the repentant lifestyle aren’t a necessary part of the gospel are not presenting the gospel Jesus offered. Such a gospel of self–satisfaction and self–righteousness is from the world, not God.

MacArthur, J. (2001). Truth for today : A daily touch of God's grace (Page 242). Nashville, Tenn.: J. Countryman.

Lessons Learned: To be saved you must repent and you must confess faith in Christ as Lord and Saviour. If you do this, then you will be in Christ and Christ will be in you. It should not be possible to live a life contrary to Christ's if we are in him. If we live in faith, then we live like Christ, and good works will naturally be a result.

Applications: Concentrate on your faith so that you will truly live "in Christ". Conform to His image and live your life by the same principals He lived His by, which is to live biblically. Study scripture so that you will be able to live biblically and know how to respond with good works in every area of your life.

Prayer Subjects: Pray for the Holy Spirit's power when I study scripture, so that I will truly understand the principals being taught, and that I would be able to apply them to my daily life. Pray for those who call themselves "carnal christians". Pray that they would come to a true understanding of what it means to follow Christ, and that they would truly repent and confess Christ as Lord and Master. "If anyone would come after Me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me" (Luke 9:23).
