The Burden Bearer

My yoke is easy and My burden is light.

Matthew 11:30

Jesus described Himself as “‘gentle and lowly in heart’” (Mat 11:29); therefore, He gives rest, not weariness, to all those who submit to Him and do His work. In Christ you have not only a Savior but also a burden bearer. He helps you carry all your burdens, including the burden of obedience.

Jesus will never give you a burden too heavy to carry. His yoke has nothing to do with the demands of the law or human works. Instead, it pertains to the Christian’s obedience to Him, which He wants to make a joyful and happy experience. Thank God for providing such a gracious burden bearer in the person of His Son.

Lessons Learned: God is good. Everything which He wants us to do is good. So it should be no surprise that following Him should be joyful and easy. It is only our own sinful, self-centered, pride which makes us resist submission to Christ. If we submit and obey, the way to eternal life may be narrow, but it is easy to follow and Christ will help us. If we resist and rebel, then we just make things harder on ourselves as we separate ourselves from Christ.

Applications: Work on submitting joyfully to the leadership of Christ. All the instructions for living according to His commands are contained in the bible, so study it diligently and obey His word. If you are in Christ, when you take up His yoke, He will be with you. He will help you and He will make the burden light.

Prayer Subjects: Pray for a willingness to submit and obey. Pray for diligence in studying God's commands and the understanding to faithfully follow them. Pray that I would be willing to take up the yoke, take up the cross daily and follow Christ (Luke 9:23).
