The Solid Foundation
Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock.
Matthew 7:24
The wise person will build his life on the rock. The rock that Jesus is referring to in today’s verse is God’s Word, the Bible. Building on the rock is therefore equivalent to hearing and obeying Christ’s words, and for us that means living according to Scripture.
After Peter confessed, “‘You are the Christ, the Son of the living God,’” our Lord told him, “‘…flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church’” (Matt. 16:16–18). Jesus’ word for “rock” in this verse is the same one He used in Matthew 7:24. It is the bedrock of God’s revelation, His Word. The rock of the solid foundation is the kind of sure, divine guidance Peter received, and it is the only base on which the true Christian life can rest.

Lessons Learned: A house is only as strong as it's foundation. If the foundation is solid, the house will be too. If the foundation is shaky, the house will likely collapse. The bible is the strong foundation we must build our christian lives on. It, like God, is powerful, holy, eternal, and unchanging. God's word is the rock upon which Christ built His church. Anything else is merely like sand. The world's philosophies of modernism, post-modernism, relativism have no foundation. They are compromising, fleeting, ever shifting. Nothing built on them can last.
Applications: Do not base your life on the world's ideas and do not live your life according to the world's standards. "Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him" (1 John 2:15). Instead, base your life and your living on biblical principals. Study scripture and live according to the way God commands, according to the way Christ taught us to live.
Prayer Subjects: Pray for a heart of uncompromising devotion to scripture. Pray that I would not be tempted by the "cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes, the boasting of what he has and does" (1 John 2:16) which come from the world and not from God. Pray that I would remain grounded on solid rock and be able to withstand the storms of the world raging around me.
